Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME domain name extension is the single TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to secure john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought 3rd-level names remained running.
